Strasbourg : a "Magistrale" city

Strasbourg, at the confluence of the Magistrale and the North Sea / Mediterranean routes

In 2005, the European Union selected the modernisation of the Paris-Strasbourg-Bratislava/Budapest rail link, the “Magistrale”, as one of the five priority infrastructure projects in the creation of a true trans-European transport network.

Inaugurated in June 2007, the East European TGV is the French link in the Magistrale. After start-up of the Rhine-Rhone TGV in 2011, Strasbourg will be the strategic hub through which the Magistrale Paris-Budapest, via Strasbourg, Munich and Vienna, and the North Sea / Mediterranean route, linking Hamburg to Marseilles and Spain, via Frankfurt, Strasbourg and Lyons, will pass.

50 TGV services a day throughout France

Since June 2007, the East European TGV has meant that Paris is only 2h20 from Strasbourg. Completion of the high speed line in 2015 will reduce this travelling time to 1h50.

Strasbourg/Paris services

  • 16 direct return journeys to Paris in 2h20,
  • 6 return journeys to Marne-la-Vallée and Massy, the TGV stations used for province/province services.

Province/province services

  • 3 return journeys to Lille in 3h20, serving Roissy Charles de Gaulle in 2h25, Arras, Douai and the Haute-Picardie station.
  • 3 return journeys to Western France: 1 direct return journey to Rennes in 5h10,
  • 2 direct return journeys to Nantes in 5h10, offering 6 connections to Le Mans (the Nantes and Rennes lines both serving this town) as well as serving Angers and Laval.
  • 3 direct return journeys to Bordeaux in 6h20 which will also serve St Pierre des Corps (Tours), Poitiers, Futuroscope and Angoulême.

These connections will also offer 18 links with the Lorraine-TGV and Champagne-Ardenne-TGV stations.

International services

  • 4 return journeys to Stuttgart in 1h30 (via Karlsruhe), including 1 which travels on to Munich (3h40)
  • 4 return journeys to Basel in 1h10,
  • 3 return journeys to Zurich in 2h10.

In 2012, the Eastern Europe TGV will be further expanded with the commissioning of the Rhine-Rhone TGV between Mulhouse and Dijon. The timed saved on the journey from Strasbourg to Lyons will be 1 hour 25 minutes compared with the current journey. Strasbourg will therefore be only 3 hours 15 minutes from Lyons and 5 hours 5 minutes from Marseilles.

Major development projects

The TGV will considerably accelerate economic development and the dynamism of the region. On a development axis to the east and west of the conurbation, called VIAROPA, Strasbourg will provide the orientation for major infrastructures and opportunities for new businesses.

New real estate, industrial parks, an ambitious housing policy (6,000 homes planned in the coming 6 years), huge office construction programmes, improved cultural and leisure facilities, modernisation of public amenities, the City offers you a broad range of options :

High speed to the heart of the city

  • A major advantage for travellers.
  • A multimodal hub at the central station to facilitate and speed up links with all other modes of transport, particularly with the efficient public transport system.

A TGV effect throughout the region covered by the city

  • A broad provision of new facilities and increased capacity related to the commissioning of the TGV will foster the harmonious and balanced development of the region and meet the needs of the industrial and tertiary sectors.

The central station : the focus of the building and development project

Situated at the hub of the VIAROPA axis, it will serve, connect and structure the four major new development hubs in the city:

The Strasbourg Kehl sector : Strasbourg new generation

A huge renovation area of around 250 hectares, traversed by the RN4 linking France to Germany, the Strasbourg-Kehl axis extends from the Heyritz site to the banks of the Rhine.

Diverse property and real estate opportunities ideal for business development

100,000 m² ready to welcome you to properties of high architectural and environmental quality :

  • Heyritz: an area reserved close to the hospital complex and a marina with offices, hotels and restaurants. It has a potential of 10,000 m² of services.
  • Etoile: a new district devoted to culture, housing and business offers tertiary space of more than 20,000 m² of high quality property opposite the Parc de l’Etoile and 1,500 parking spaces.
  • Danube: an area with broad frontages on the water offering a facelift to the RN4, converted into an urban boulevard, providing more than 22,000 m² on either side of the road.
  • Starlette: this completely new centre along the Vauban port basin represents 30,000 m² of tertiary space and 20,000 m² of businesses and services.
  • Porte de France: its exceptional situation on the banks of the Rhine and the Jardin des Deux Rives makes it a privileged site with a potential of 15,000 m² to house activities, businesses and accommodation.

A dynamic urban metamorphosis

  • New traffic: the extension of the tram network and the development of the RN4 into an urban boulevard offer first rate access and make this axis the direct extension from the city centre.
  • An innovative living and working environment: the Promenade des Quais, the Parc de l’Etoile, and the Jardin des Deux Rives on the banks of the Rhine complete the attraction of quality housing close to the water and in the immediate vicinity of offices and shopping facilities.
  • A gravitational pull for the entire conurbation: the Music and Dance Complex, the Austerlitz Media Library, the Community and Regional Archives, "Le Vaisseau" (a scientific activity centre for children) … are all public amenities with an essentially cultural purpose for the greater good of the residents of the city.

The Central Station : a multimodal exchange hub

The Central Station will become a resolutely contemporary site, providing links between all modes of transport to foster the influence of the TGV dynamic in every part of Strasbourg and the urban community: the regional train services, the tram, the tram/train, buses and taxis are brought together as efficiently as possible, not to mention cyclists and pedestrians.

Wacken: the European district

The Wacken district is strengthening its vocation as the home of the European institutions with the extension of the Council of Europe, the construction of the European Pharmacopoeia, the construction of Région Alsace offices, and the extension of the tram network as far as the Court of Human Rights… immediate tertiary availability comes to 11,000 m² close to banking institutions and around 15,000 m² on the Îlot Tivoli.

Porte Ouest and EuroZénith: the focus for shows and exhibitions

On its 60-hectare site, this new hub dedicated to promotion, leisure activities and the influence of the conurbation, is a huge development area which will house :

  • A 10,000-seat Zénith, which is currently being constructed. This amenity will boost the variety of entertainments on offer, which was lacking in Strasbourg.
  • In the medium term, an Exhibition Complex will be developed and complemented with hotels, services and office space programmes.
