The range of public transport facilities, the cycle tracks and the pedestrianised paths in Strasbourg all encourage people to use modes of getting around other than the car.

Public transport : a prioritary choice
Bus/Tram
Apart from the fact of providing state of the art equipment (trams, air-conditioned buses with easy access for persons of reduced mobility), the urban transport network has the advantage of being dense; the geographical area covered is very extensive, travelling times and distances are shorter (development of bus lanes), and waiting times are short. Tram frequency may be less than three minutes on the busiest route.
The CTS's airport shuttle connects the Baggersee stop (tram A) with Strasbourg airport in 20 minutes, with a departure every 20 or 40 minutes. It will cost you only 5,20 € (9,70 € for a return ticket) and you can buy a ticket from the driver. In 2007, the tram-train will connect the city to the airport.
In December 2008, the first phase in the Strasbourg-Entzheim-Molsheim tram-train (periurban section) will be commissioned (TER – regional express trains – scheduled every 15 minutes). By the end of 2009, the first phase in the urban section will provide connections between the railway station to the Robertsau neighbourhood and the Esplanade neighbourhood.
Between August 2007 and June 2008, the tram network will extend progressively out towards Ostwald/Lingolsheim (extension of line B) and in the direction of Neudorf/Neuhof (extension of line C). A new line will be created (line E) going from Illkirch to Robertsau, also providing a service to the European district. 13.5 km of additional track will thus be constructed.
You can get a general route map covering the conurbation of Strasbourg, which gives the timetables and plans of each tram and bus line, and a map covering the interurban network, from the CTS :

Pedal power
In Strasbourg, travelling by bicycle is encouraged thanks to:
a continuous network of more than 440 km of cycle tracks, fitted with a growing number of signal installations to make travelling safer
- numerous secure bicycle racks and the creation of Véloparcs (structures in which bicycles are guarded), which discourage theft
- a fleet of rental bicycles, "Vélocation", offering a number of rental options at a low price (100 € deposit):
- daily : 12 € (5 euro for half a day- weekly : 10 € - customer loyalty (10 days + 2 days free) : 40 € - monthly : 26 € - students : 20 € per month - annual bicycle rental contract for companies : 160 € - under 14 years of age (accompanied by an adult): 5 €
- structures in which bicycles are guarded : "Véloparc"
- daily price : 1 € - annual price : 42 €

The combined solution: car / public transport
Several systems and services encouraging intermodal travel have been set up to facilitate periurban travel.
For the modest price of 2.70 € (3 € at the "Rotonde"), the 7 carpark-tram relays (Rotonde, Baggersee, Ducs d'Alsace, Elsau, Rive de l'Aar, Hoenheim Gare, Krimmeri) allow you to park your car all day and get a return tram ticket for each person travelling in the car. Nearly 4,000 parking spaces are available. With the opening of new tram lines, 2 additional park-and-ride car parks will come into being, offering a capacity of around 1,000 additional parking spaces.
- There are 15 stations to switch directly from bus to tram equipped with video screens showing waiting times.
- Strasbourg railway station offers direct access to the tram to help you to manage your travels better. The combined use of these two modes of transport is encouraged by the Alsaplus subscription.

A car when you need one
For those who need occasional use of a car or a second car, taxis or carshare options such as Auto'trement provide a stress-free solution. Carshare has been operating in Strasbourg since 2000. Members can use various types of vehicle and the rental cost is dependent on the length of time for which the vehicle is needed (1 hour minimum) and the number of kilometers travelled. Several carshare sites have also been set up in the carpark-tram relays to associate this system with the use of public transport.

Effective parking
The efforts made by the City of Strasbourg have been brought to bear on the fight against illegal parking (squares, narrow streets, pavements) and the reorientation of users of long-stay carparks towards public transport and carpark-tram relays. This is why short-stay paid parking on the roads in the city centre has been generalised. Parking meter tariffs are 1.60 € per hour (1 to 2 hours maximum) and guarantee a high rotation of vehicles; consequently, it is adviseable only to use the car as a second choice to get to the very centre of the city.
On the other hand, 19 carparks with a capacity ranging from 150 to almost 1,300 spaces are available on the outskirts of the city centre. Some of them benefit from specific rates. For example, the Ste-Marguerite carpark allows you to park for 6 hours for only 2.50 €. Austerlitz will cost you 3,60 € for 3 hours. What is more, 10 carparks offer monthly, quarterly or annual subscription options (Broglie, Ste-Aurélie, Austerlitz, Bateliers, Canal, Porte de l'Hôpital, Ste-Marguerite, Parkings des Halles : P1 Marais Vert, P2 Sébastopol, P3 Wilson) for residents.
Residents who do not possess a private garage can take advantage of preferential tariff options, authorising them to park near to where they live. Away from the centre (from the "Grande Ile"), parking on the road is to become free of charge.
