Accommodation and education of children

Whatever their age group, children and young people will be in good hands. Strasbourg offers a large diversity of schools, middle schools, secondary schools, professional training, grandes écoles and universities. Certain courses of study are international from nursery school to secondary school.

From birth to nursery school

Your child can be accommodated in various kinds of structure :

Crèches

  • Community crèches look after children (up to 3 years of age) during the day from 7 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.
  • Family crèches are based in the home of a child minder
  • Parental crèches are associations of parents who accommodate their own children with the assistance of one or more professionals

Playgroups

These accommodate children up to 6 years of age on an occasional or part-time basis. There are almost thirty in Strasbourg.

Jardins d'enfants

This accommodation structure, which is unique to Strasbourg, acts as a link between the family and the nursery school for children between 2 and 4 years of age. There are almost twenty of them.

Qualified child minders

These accommodate the children entrusted to them by their parents in their own home.

Au pair girls

An alternative to the structures already mentioned would be to hire someone to work in your home or an au pair girl. Financial aid may be granted in the form of a tax deduction.

School education

The French school system has four principal phases:

  • nursery school (3-6 years)
  • primary school (6-11 years)
  • middle school (11-14 years)
  • secondary school (15-18 years)

On completion of school education, the "baccalauréat" entitles the holder to go to university.

Teaching is provided at state or private schools. Private schools may be under contract to the State, in which case they provide the same curriculum as state schools.

The choice of a state school for your child depends on the sector in which you live. Exceptions to the sectorisation rule are occasionally granted, particularly in cases where the school which the child should attend does not provide the language teaching of your choice. This is the case for certain languages (Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian) or for teaching which concentrates on trilingual type education.

The advantages of Strasbourg's schools

  • The "baccalauréat" pass rate of pupils in Strasbourg is one of the highest in France.
  • Foreign language learning in Strasbourg is considerably facilitated. German language schooling starts at primary school for more or less all 8-9 year old pupils in Strasbourg.
  • School timetables in the Bas-Rhin are organised in such a way as to allow nursery and primary school pupils one Saturday in three off.

Registration and school meals

Nursery and elementary schools

Children over the age of two on the first day of the school year can be admitted to nursery school. Registration formalities take place in March-April, at the town hall (administrative centre, local town hall annex, town hall bus) or in the foyer of state schools, children's gardens and crèches.

The majority of schools offer :

  • child-minding centres : in the morning and evening on Wednesdays during school holidays (without school meals)
  • activity and nursery leisure centres (CALM) : on Wednesdays and during school holidays (with the option of school meals)
  • school canteens on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

Concentration on language teaching

The international sections

The international sections, from nursery school to secondary school, aim to enable foreign children to follow their school education in a specific system intended to facilitate adaptation to the French system whilst maintaining contact with their own culture and taking over the relay from the school education they have already received. They also enable French-speaking children who have already benefitted from early exposure to a foreign language to broaden their linguistic and cultural horizons.

The international sections accomodate foreign children (between 25 and 50 % of the attendance at the sections) and pupils with dual nationality. Teaching is provided by French teachers and foreign teachers. The latter work in their own language in classes in the history and literature of the country concerned in programmes set up in consultation with the educational autorithies of both countries.

In Strasbourg two nursery schools, two elementary schools, a middle school and a secondary school offer international sections. Five languages are practised in alternation with French, depending on the national origin of the child : English, German, Spanish, Italian and Polish. Classes in Russian are being considered at elementary school level.

The international sections aside, a number of sites offer the option of concentrated language teaching within the framework of bilingual, trilingual and European sections.

The bilingual and trilingual sections

In nursery and primary schools

In the area covered by the Communauté Urbaine, 14 so-called "parity" bilingual French-German sites (7 in nursery school and 7 in primary school) offer 13 hours' teaching in German per week.

At middle and secondary school

All middle schools in the Strasbourg education authority offer bilingual sections. They are not parity sites but sites where teaching of the language concerned is reinforced (five hours' teaching per week instead of three).

From the age of 11-12 (instead of 13-14), the trilingual sections allow pupils to learn two modern languages at the rhythm of three hours per week each. Access to these sections is subject to a language test.

The European sections

Thirteen middle schools and thirteen secondary schools in the Communauté Urbaine de Strasbourg offer European sections. These offer a more intense teaching timetable for the chosen language (German, English, Spanish, Italian) during the third school year in the section. Part of the programme in certain non-language disciplines is taught in the chosen language. The recruitment of pupils is generally made from the usual sector of the establishment offering this schooling. Exceptions may be made for pupils living outside the sector.

To find out about the detailed conditions of access to bilingual and trilingual schooling and schooling in the international and European sections, contact the establishment in the sector directly or:

Schooling in English

The International School at Lucie Berger is a private international school which provides schooling entirely in English. From the ages of 6 to 11, it offers schooling in the traditional subjects based on international programmes. French as a foreign language is also taught for 6 hours per week.

Another private establishment, the Strasbourg International School, offers schooling in English intended for children between the ages of 2½ and 12. The programme follows the broad lines of the English and American education systems, whilst aiming to facilitate the integration of pupils into their country of residence, particularly by offering courses in French.

Higher education

With more than 50,000 "post-bac" students, Strasbourg is a city which offers a broad variety of higher education: BTS, DUT, university education, preparatory classes, engineering schools, business school.

The 3 universities in the Communauté Urbaine :

Université Louis Pasteur
Sciences, medicine, pharmacy, chemistry, physics.

Université Marc Bloch
Humanities and foreign languages.

Université Robert Schuman
Law, social sciences, political sciences, management.

Registration dates vary depending on the courses chosen. Certain courses have so many registrations to manage that the pre-registration period may be as early as July, or even earlier (May for the preparatory classes, April for certain IUTs, February for the entrance examination for the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Strasbourg). You are therefore recommended to inquire as early as possible in order to avoid disappointment.

If you are somewhat confused by the number of further educational courses possible in Strasbourg, you can contact the orientation services offered by the Centres d'Information et d'Orientation (CIO), as well as the three Services Communs Universitaires d'Information et d'Orientation (SCUIO), attached to each of the universities in Strasbourg.
