University network

The ULP was the first French university to implement a particular IT strategy with the creation of Osiris. A metropolitan network, Osiris serves campuses in the Communauté Urbaine de Strasbourg, from Cronenbourg to Illkirch, taking in the Esplanade and the Strasbourg Teaching Hospitals. Since its inception in 1988, the network has brought together the three universities in Strasbourg, the engineering schools in the city and the research centres.

Two triennial contracts, which form part of the Strasbourg, Ville Européenne campaign, have enabled the construction of the entire infrastructure (fibre optics, active equipment). Their management is handled by the  CRC (Centre Réseau Communication (Network Communication Centre)) at the ULP on behalf of the teaching and research establisments of Strasbourg.

Osiris in figures

  • 16 establishments linked to the network (20 sites, more than 100 interconnected buildings), grouping around 50,000 potential users
  • 20,000 interconnected PCs
  • 50 km of cables buried under the area covered by the Communauté Urbaine
  • 2 secure sub-networks (teaching / research and administration)
  • a throughput of 2 Gb/s on Renater and 1Gb/s available within the majority of buildings

Concrete applications

  • Close collaboration with the teaching hospitals in the city : data exchange between praticioners and university lecturers, elaboration of medical files based on various medical analyses
  • Video broadcasts of surgical interventions by the IRCAD (Institut de Recherche sur les Cancers de l'Appareil Digestif (Institute of Research into Cancers of the Digestive System)), a first in Europe
  • Data transfer and updates each night of the bibliographical database of the IGBMC (Institut de Génétique et de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire (Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology))

Renater

The local Osiris network is linked to the national Renater network (REeseau NAtional de télécommunications pour la Technologie, l'Enseignement et la Recherche (National Network of telecommunications for Technology, Education and Research)), of which Strasbourg is a transit point. 600 sites are linked to Renater, which is itself connected to the Paneuropean network, GEANT.

The objective of Renater is to:

  • enable national and international connection to the research sites
  • to federate the existing networks

The first French IPv6/WLAN network in Strasbourg

A local wireless network, IPv6/WLAN, has been set up in Strasbourg as part of a collaboration between the ULP and France Telécom R&D.

The eventual objective is to connect all university sites to the IPv6 network with wireless connections. IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) constitutes a considerable leap forward, making it possible to addsress...65,000 times more machines than
version 4.
