ICT and image

The proportion of jobs directly concerned by Information and Communication Technologies (or, in accordance with European ECNS - Electronic Communication Networks and Services - directives) makes Alsace the fifth most important region in France. The conurbation of Strasbourg alone accounts for almost 10,000 jobs in the sector, i.e. nearly half of the ICT jobs in the region.

The Information and Communication Technologies

The Communauté Urbaine de Strasbourg accounts mainly for service activities in the fields of telephony (69 % of jobs in the region) and informatics (55 % of jobs in the region).

Services to business connected with using the NICT cover an immense range:

  • access and hosting provisions
  • website design and construction
  • consultancy and audit
  • training
  • systems and networks
  • software and software package design
  • the provision of equipment

Whilst informatics is characterised by a multitude of small structures, telephony is dominated by large companies with more than 500 employees, such as France Télécom and Alcatel Business Systems.

Thirty or so companies are active in the field of multimedia on the production of content (excluding audiovisual activities) on behalf of institutions and businesses (CD-ROMs, Internet sites, company presentation films).

Some niche markets are particularly dynamic : broadcasting equipment, audio and video surveillance equipment, analytical instrumentation.

Strasbourg at the heart of the image

The dynamism of the image sector is ensured in Alsace by the activities of a hundred or so companies, i.e. around 2,000 jobs. Activities are diverse (audiovisual, multimedia and technical service provisions) and the presence of two broadcasting companies (ARTE and France 3) employing almost 600 people, offers local business considerable subcontracting opportunities.

The diversity of this business is structured around a "Pôle Image", a veritable technological hub covering economic and training and research activities. A dozen research laboratories (83 research scientists) are grouped together in an "Pôle Image Recherche". Their work covers the full extent of the image chain, from acquisition to production, taking in analysis and scientific exploitation.

The projects which underpin the Pôle Image

The Communauté Urbaine de Strasbourg, along with other Alsatian municipalities, plays an active role in projects which underpin the field of digital imaging :

  • Study for a European school for careers in television
  • Creation of the multimedia production centre
  • Creation of a scientific image resources centre
  • Development of a regional telecommunications infrastructure providing thirty or so towns in Alsace with broadband access

Electronic Communication Networks

Strasbourg offers a high density of electronic telecommunication networks :

  • a fibre optic loop network connecting Strasbourg to Paris, Lille, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels and London
  • a GIX (a broadband Internet exchange node)
  • IDCs (Internet Data Centres)

Telecom operators and networks

Strasbourg is situated on a major Internet transit axis and, taking advantage of this fact, attracts numerous telecom operators and Internet access providers. It occupies second place in France and fifteenth in Europe in terms of telecommunication operators (Idate study 2002).

The principal operators active in the area are :

  • Neuf - Cégétel
  • France Télécom
  • Télé 2
  • Colt Télécommunications France SAS
  • Completel
  • Level 3
  • Free
  • GC Pan European Crossing France
  • LambdaNet Communications France SAS
  • Noos - Numéricable
  • Est - Vidéocommunication
  • Bouygues Télécom
  • SFR
  • Orange
  • Alice

Just about all of the area covered by the city of Strasbourg is unbundled. It will thus become possible to encourage competition between the ADSL providers.
