Tertiary

With more than 130,000 posts, the tertiary sector in the conurbation of Strasbourg represents two-thirds of the jobs in Bas-Rhin and 40% of the regional job market. There are more than 280 jobs in the tertiary sector for every 1,000 inhabitants, a quarter of whom work in services to business. The sector has reached critical mass, which enables it to offer a broad range of skills.

The tertiary sector in Strasbourg is noted for the extent of its contribution to individual services, particularly in the fields of health and education.

This diversity is a source of synergy, particularly in the hospital sector in the form of the University Hospital Centre, the importance of which is intimately connected with the presence of research activities and the emergence of cutting edge industries and services.

Advanced services to business

One of the main characteristics of the tertiary sector in Strasbourg is the input devoted to advanced services to business :

  • research and development
  • financial activities
  • consultancy and assistance

The main activities

With a number of corporate headquarters of banks and insurance companies, all areas of financial activity are represented in Strasbourg. These enable investors to cover all of the financial aspects of their operations.

Along with the property sector, R&D, consultancy and assistance to business represent almost 15% of the total salaried job market.

Network services, including transport and telecommunications, are particularly well developed in Strasbourg, a city of exchange and a European confluence of information and products.

Advanced services to the public and households are noted for their density and quality: hospitals, tertiary education, research and culture. The CHU in Strasbourg is the city's largest employer.

Key figures

Around 180,000 jobs with :

  • 34,000 in trade
  • 37,000 in services to business
  • 45,000 in education, health and social action

110,400 m² of office space will be available within a year, i.e.
74 % growth since 1999.

Specific hosting centres

To satisfy this development in the tertiary sector – the sector, in fact, that creates the most jobs – the city of Strasbourg has set up specific hosting centres: "E Puissance 3, the Espace Européen de l'Entreprise" based in Schiltigheim and the Aéroparc in Entzheim.

The Espace Européen de l'Entreprise hosts the electronic banking centre for the Société Générale. Amongst its most recent start-ups are major national and international service companies: UBR-Pramex (a subsidiary of the Banque Populaire and the German Volksbanken), Continent (a subsidiary of the Italian Toro Assicurazioni), MMA Assurances (the territorial delegation for Alsace, Lorraine and the Territoire de Belfort) and Télé-assurances (a subsidiary of the GMF).
